Start with the door construction
Many internal doors are hollow core. A small surface issue may be repairable, but a large hole can leave very little solid material to work with.
Check the hardware too
Impact damage may loosen hinges, twist the latch or damage the frame. Repairing only the visible hole can miss the reason the door no longer closes correctly.
When replacement is cleaner
If the door skin is badly broken, the frame is distorted or the repair area is large and visible, replacement can produce a better finish with less labour.
Match the finish
A replacement door usually needs fitting, handle transfer or replacement, preparation and paint. Include those steps in the scope so the job is actually complete.
